Physical support

Physical Rehab and Support

"After my operation my balance was badly affected and my mobility. I had to rely on others to get around. Since using BodyBASIC I can now walk unassisted and for a lot further. This means I can join my family when they go out walking which is something I have always enjoyed."

We support people that need physical help in a number of ways:

BodyBASIC assisted exercise suite

In March 2006, HRH the Princess Royal opened "BodyBASIC", a state-of-the-art power assisted exercise facility at our Centre in Salford, to meet the need for accessible exercise.

BASIC was awarded a five year Big Lottery grant between April 2011 to March 2016 to provide 500 people recovering from stroke with power assisted exercise. Read more here.

Power assisted exercise equipment is specifically designed for people with physical disabilities who need to exercise but could not or would not access a conventional gym. BodyBASIC comprises 16 specially designed assisted exercise machines and in addition, a treadmill and balance board. This technology allows a person to exercise in three modes; completely passively for those who are immobile, to exercise with minimum effort required or with full effort required.  If able, patients can progress actively to work to an assisted or full resistance based aerobic program of exercises.

When people are physically active, their body releases endorphins – a natural painkiller and stress reducer. Endorphins help lower levels of anxiety and depression and create a sense of wellbeing. Benefits of the Autotherapy service at BASIC have also included:

  • increased functional capacity
  • improved circulation
  • increased mobility & co-ordination
  • increased muscle strength, increased general health, fitness and wellbeing
  • improved mood and self-esteem
  • reduction in the risk of stroke, heart disease, hypertension and diabetes.

Following an assessment by one of our friendly qualified physiotherapists, BodyBASIC members are given a tailored exercise plan to follow.

YouGrabber

The YouGrabber at BASIC uses virtual reality games for upper limb rehabilitation where manual dexterity has been affected by injury, for example following a stroke. It is helpful for people with sensory-motor and cognitive impairments and provides interactive therapy exercises which focus on visuo-motor finger, hand and arm coordination. With this intensive training the patient’s therapy experience is improved, with the long-term goal of regaining independence in everyday life.

Berkel Bike

The BerkelBike is a combination of handcycle and recumbent bike and is driven by using both the power of the arms as well as legs from the comfort of a manual or electric wheelchair. This amazing invention offers individuals who suffer from medical conditions such as Polio, Stroke (CVA), MS or Spinal Cord Lesion a new way of exercising without the need to transfer from a wheelchair.

The BerkelBike at BASIC is connected to a cycle trainer, which connects the user to a PC. This gives access to a variety of virtual reality and training software packages.
