The CAREN (Computer Assisted Rehabilitation Environment)

"I liked the CAREN from the start with patients that had a high level of physical ability, but had doubts as to its effectiveness with low ability patients. BUT results with patients of low ability and low motivation, particularly large, tall men where physio opportunities in a gym with a petite therapist are limited, have been amazing and those patients love it!"

The CAREN (Computer Assisted Rehabilitation Environment)

Our new CAREN system enables patients with a disability to practice real life situations in a safe and controlled environment, leading to improved physical stamina, better cognitive skills, dual tasking and improved confidence.

CAREN puts patients at the helm of a life-size video game, forces them to use atrophied muscles and teaches the basic skills necessary to recover quicker from brain and spinal injuries and other disorders.

BASIC’s CAREN provides:

  • Analysis of movement in real-time, providing immediate feedback to therapist and patient.
  • A software system, named the human body model (HBM), that computes body movement in real-time in 300 muscle elements.
  • Exposure to environments that are physically challenging without putting patients in danger.
  • A system that mimics changes in terrain, encountered in the virtual environment, for example crossing the street or walking on uneven surfaces while in the safety of a harness.

The system will:

  • Provide movement analysis and statistical objective data reports, namely:
    • a nine-page detailed clinical report comparing kinematic data for left and right lower limbs, including joint angles, joint moments and joint powers
    • comprehensive analysis of trunk, hips, knees and ankles
    • mean average spatio-temporal parameters listed
    • specific additional summary provided for each client, with suitable recommendations and advice for training, rehabilitation or performance improvements
  • Be tailored to the patient’s specifications and to their rehabilitation.
  • Improve confidence.
  • Improve motivation.
  • Be beneficial even when the patient is experiencing pain.
  • The system can be used successfully in lieu of traditional therapy post stroke and post-traumatic brain injury.

CAREN key features include:

  • 6 directions of movement hydraulic motion base
  • 3m diameter platform top with a dual belt instrumented treadmill, incorporating 6 force plates
  • 10 camera real-time motion capture system
  • 120-180 degree cylindrical screen projection system
  • surround sound system
  • D-flow software that enables the CAREN to respond to the motions of the subject and the subject motions to the system.
  • Human Body Model that makes it possible to view generated muscle forces in the human body in real-time.

"The CAREN has been a proven catalyst to patient’s functional improvements in mild traumatic brain injury rehabilitation. Significant functional improvement was observed in patients upon the addition of the CAREN system, in contrast to conventional medical management lasting over six months."
