Who We Are Supporter Stories Shannon's Story Shannon's Story Shannon was just 17 years old when she suffered a stroke. It was caused by treatment for brain cancer and left her unable to use the left side of her body. This is her story: “I remember waking up in the middle of the night wanting to go to the toilet and I couldn't get up the reason being that I'd had a stroke in the middle of the night. I went into hospital at Salford Royal and I remember being in there and a doctor suggests to me that you should try basic. The first time I went to BASIC I was in a wheelchair” The virtual reality system that Shannon has used to help with her rehabilitation consists of a harness, treadmill and motion trackers. “You put this [harness] on and I go onto the [VR System] and we do all types of different activity games which builds up my strength in my leg and arms ” Since Shannon's initial visit in August 2015, she has made remarkable progress. “I'm 19 now and I'm walking. It's been very hard, but I feel like I always try to see the positive sides of therapy. If I didn't try, if I didn't come here I don't think I'd be where I am today. ”
