Shannon's Story

Shannon was just 17 years old when she suffered a stroke. It was caused by treatment for brain cancer and left her unable to use the left side of her body.

This is her story:

“I remember waking up in the middle of the night wanting to go to the toilet and I couldn't get up the reason being that I'd had a stroke in the middle of the night.
I went into hospital at Salford Royal and I remember being in there and a doctor suggests to me that you should try basic. The first time I went to BASIC I was in a wheelchair”

The virtual reality system that Shannon has used to help with her rehabilitation consists of a harness, treadmill and motion trackers.

“You put this [harness] on and I go onto the [VR System] and we do all types of different activity games which builds up my strength in my leg and arms

Since Shannon's initial visit in August 2015, she has made remarkable progress.

“I'm 19 now and I'm walking. It's been very hard, but I feel like I always try to see the positive sides of therapy. If I didn't try, if I didn't come here I don't think I'd be where I am today.
