Derek Gaskell Chair of Trustees & BASIC Founder Expand BASIC was founded in 1986 by Derek Gaskell after his wife Dorothy had undergone life-saving brain surgery at Salford Royal Hospital. Dorothy suffered a subarachnoid haemorrhage and after leaving hospital she could not walk or talk and suffered deep depression. After many years she recovered well, but the unexpected horror of this experience prompted Derek to set up the charity. Originally called 'Neurological Research', Derek set about raising funds for Salford Royal Hospital's Neurosurgical Unit. Although he started out with humble car boot sales, his entrepreneurial spirit soon led him into chartering and selling flights on Concorde, selling trips to the Orient Express and weekend cruises on the QE2. Thanks to Derek's dedication in his fundraising activities the charity was able to fund research and equipment for the hospital as well as employ its first member of staff in 1994. Derek remains actively involved at BASIC, serving as a Trustee and regularly visiting the centre.
